Traditional linguistic research has largely been focusing on the analysis of observable linguistic forms, often overlooking speakers’ perceptions of these varieties. This paper presents preliminary findings from a study on the perceptual representations of linguistic varieties in the Dolomite region, based on a perception test using stimuli from 11 distinct local varieties. The data were collected from 51 speakers, aged 16 to 35, from the Dolomite area and analysed using a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results reveal both alignments and discrepancies with traditional accounts of the region, while also contributing new perspectives on the study of local variation and highlighting aspects of linguistic perception that have so far received little attention.
