An unpublished letter from Theodor Gartner to Hugo de Rossi, dated 1912, provides valuable evidence of the close exchanges that took place in the early decades of the twentieth century between the holder of the Chair of Romance Studies at the University of Innsbruck and the Ladin intellectuals active in the Tyrolean district capital. The letter contains a broad range of observations concerning the first partial draft of the Ladinisches Wörterbuch, Lower Fassa Valley variant (brach), whose handwritten version was hastily completed in 1914, at a time when the outbreak of the First World War was already imminent. The article examines the glosses added by Th. Gartner to the manuscript supplied by the scholar from Fassa Valley (letters A and B). These glosses highlight both the value and the critical aspects of a lexicographic work in statu nascendi, pointing out various semantic and formal issues that were not always adequately resolved in the dictionary’s final version. Notwithstanding the limitations found in De Rossi’s German definitions, Th. Gartner’s valuable remarks offer an opportunity to explore numerous entries in the Fassa lexical heritage, which are further discussed and commented upon here through appropriate ergological and ethnographic comparisons.
