Short description: To protect grazing animals from carnivores in alpine regions, multi-layered stone structures (“pens”) were built in a more or less circular shape since the Bronze Age (Fig. 3). For this purpose, particularly well-suited sites were chosen in the landscape, whereby one was careful to make use of large boulders or other already existing terrain features in the best possible way. Dating such structures is often difficult, as there is usually little or no datable find material on the surface. There are two pens at the upper Stuckensee, one of which uses the lake as a natural boundary.
