Abstract
Three large series of witch trials took place in the Fassa Valley/Val di Fassa in 1573, 1627–1631 and 1642–1646. The sources documenting the first of these trials and its main protagonist Ursula Lombarda were discovered in 1910 by Hartmann Ammann in the diocesan archives of Bressanone/Brixen. They were presented to the general public in 1950, after Ammann’s death. Owing to a new analysis of the documents and newly discovered sources, this article reviews the proceedings of the 1573 witch trial and reveals aspects hitherto unnoticed. The focus is not only on Lombarda, her confessions and acts of denunciation, but also on witness statements as well as petitions and certificates relating to conduct and behavior that were written by family members and Lombarda’s friends. While Ursula Lombarda was executed as a witch, most of the other prisoners were released. The concluding chapter presents various versions of the legends surrounding the witch Lombarda. According to most tales the events took place in the Tierser Valley. However, only some of the information and images presented are in line with historical facts.
